Cease Smoking

Smoking too much can be a factor in causing several different of pain conditions. Even if you don’t smoke, try to avoid other smokers, as the second-hand smoke is just as harmful. 

Cut Back on Caffeine and Alcohol

Just like cigarettes, alcoholic beverages and caffeine-heavy drinks can act as trigger for chronic pain conditions.  While you don’t have to cut back entirely, try to limit yourself to only one or two drinks. Additionally, avoid beer and red wine if possible, as this are potent headache triggers.  

Take Steps to Reduce Stress

Reducing stress isn’t as easy as it sounds but is an excellent strategy for pain relief. However, you should definitely try as much as you can to relax and wind down after a long and anxious day. Some things to try include taking a hot bath, meditating on your experiences, listening to relaxation music, or getting a massage.

Use an Ice Pack

If you find yourself in the midst of a severe headache, try using ice or cold to numb the area. It has an anesthetic effect that can provide fast headache relief. 

Get Enough Sleep

Having a regular pattern of sleep is essential to finding pain relief.  Always be sure to wake up and go to bed at the same times each day, and avoid oversleeping or under sleeping if possible.

Use Good Posture

These days, many people have poor posture due to sitting at desks all day or spending too much time looking down at their phones. It’s important to reduce the strain this puts on your back and neck, as misalignments here can contribute to neck pain, shoulder pain and tension headaches.

Find a Dark and Quiet Space

Whenever you’re experiencing a migraine headache, you’ll be especially bothered by sounds and lights. Counteract these triggers by finding a quiet place to lay down for a while. Use a comfortable pillow to support your head as you try to relax.

Make Sure Your Eyes Are Healthy

Many people who work in offices or on computers all day suffer from eye strain. This is a big factor in the development of tension headaches. Plan a visit to the eye doctor to make sure your eyes are functioning as well as they should.

Exercise on a Regular Basis

One of the best pain relief treatments is exercise. Simple exercises such as taking a walk or using the stairs instead of the elevator can help relieve the stress on your body from immobility.

Record Your Triggers

Keeping track of the things that cause your headaches can go a long way in avoiding them in the future. By logging the foods you eat in a day, the weather, and the different locations you visited, you might be able to track down your specific pain triggers.
